Tongue Thrust Exercises – 1: /t/

Tongue Exercises

Make a clicking sound with the tongue, by pushing the tongue tip and blade tightly against the top of the mouth and, without touching the teeth, drop the tongue with a clicking sound.

Ask your child to do this exercise whenever the occasion permits and at least once a day sit down with him had have him do it for you for 5-10 minutes.

When possible (while studying, watching TV, etc.) have your child hold a raisin, cheerio, or other small edible object against the alveolar ridge with their tongue tip. See how many minutes they can hold it there.

Sound Exercises

  1. Starting with the tongue tip positioned behind the lower teeth, make the /t/ sound repeatedly. Make the sound with the tongue tip/blade (the part of the tongue just behind the tip) contacting the alveolar ridge (the part of the roof of the mouth that feels like a bumpy ridge).
  2. Practice the list of words that end with /t/ (on the back of this page). When you practice, make sure the tongue tip stays behind the teeth for the /t/ sound.
  3. Put each /t/ word in a sentence or phrase and practice them, making sure the tongue tip stays behind the teeth for the /t/ sound.
