Tongue Thrust Exercises 9

Tongue Exercises

Chew as many pieces of sugarless gum or bubblegum as possible, all at one time. Keep the lips closed and when you swallow, make sure the tongue goes up and back and does not touch or push on the front teeth. Chew hard; keep chewing until the tongue and jaw muscles are fatigued and you can’t chew any longer.

The larger the wad of gum and the harder you chew, the more beneficial this exercise is. Bee’s wax may be substituted for gum.

Sound Exercises

1.        With the tip of the tongue positioned down behind the lower teeth, make the /ds/ sound repeatedly. Make the sound with the tongue blade on the alveolar ridge. Note: in this exercise, the /s/ in /ds/ has the sound of /z/.

  1. Make a list of words that end with the /ds/ sound (i.e. birds, beds, heads, etc.). Practice these words making sure the tongue tip stays down behind the bottom front teeth for these sounds.

  1. Put each /ds/ word in a sentence or phrase and practice them, making sure the tongue tip stays down for the /ds/ sound.
